Career choices always come with a bit of compromise. We've all heard, "Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.", whether or not it was really Confucius who first said it. And it is a great quote because it succinctly describes a goal we all dream about. For most of us it remains elusive, as our career paths combine luck (good or bad) with serendipity...but little more.
So truly CHOOSING what we are going to do every morning when we rise is a joy that remains aspirational for most. I'm doing that now and Freud would have the proverbial field day parsing these choices....
Online Business Directories- Its difficult to imagine a business model more overdone than this one. But for some reason I see a niche that needs attention...the truly LOCAL, truly COMPLETE, directory of all practical things looked for...delivered clearly, succinctly, and efficiently. Make money? Probably not, but how much fun will it be to link a local community in a zillion different ways without worrying about that.
Entrepreneurial MicroLending- I've never given much thought to lending money to entrepreneurs in little towns all over the Earth. But the impact on lives is enormous and the fulfillment and satisfaction exceeds most of what I've spent my time on in recent years. What an opportunity to share in the success of a diverse network of likeminded business people without the slightest possibility of receiving anything significant in return. Pay it forward!
Executive Coaching & Sales Training- I'm probably screwing up some folk's business models because I really have no interest in getting paid significantly by sharing, prodding, pushing, guiding, encouraging and otherwise goading executives and salespeople to pushing harder, making more wholesome choices, and finding fulfillment from THEIR work...but it feels right. And its fun. And I get to be a small part in the success of others.
Distribution- My business "wheelhouse" is the efficient distribution and outstanding customer service of B2C and B2B products. Not faddish, "next big thing" on the planet type of products, just the stuff that people want. I just want to be a microcosm of Wal-Mart combined with the sort of high-touch service that makes people happy. Hopefully a gazillion folks will be happy to pay a few extra farthings for such service, as I better make a couple bucks at this to support my other habits...
So, tell me Sigmund...what do you see???
