I've always been a bit of an entrepreneur. I guess I've always thought we all are at some level, though maybe some are missing a chromosome making them genetically incapable.
Its difficult to define exactly what it means to be an entrepreneur. A dictionary definition is easy. But defining the truly differentiating factors is not so simple nor objective.
It's Really NOT about the money...
Everyone thinks the entrepreneur is driven by money...but for the truly successful and fulfilled entrepreneur, money is just a measurement. It's what we use to keep score, but it is not what gets us out of bed in the morning and sends us into the street to do what needs done.
Love to Learn...
Some companies do a great job of encouraging perpetual learning and if your does, then take advantage of it! Sure, some of it will be lame and some of it will prove to be a waste of time. But by intentionally pursuing it, you'll be amazed at what sticks, and what insights come out of seemingly nowhere. Chasing my entrepreneurial dreams allows me to chase whatever learning tickles my fancy...this minute, this hour, this day, or this year. Epiphanies seem to come constantly.
Making my own choices...
I spent more years than I care to admit trying to make sure everyone's objectives were met...except for my own. Striving away at the corporate grindstone was thoroughly enjoyable when corporate objectives and my objectives were aligned. But I was like the proverbial frog in the kettle, downplaying my own personal frustrations as corporate objectives became successively more dysfunctional. That can screw with your head in far too many ways. So if you are working for the man and you like it, then power on! Just don't forget that it is always YOUR choice to do so, and YOUR choice to stop.
Maybe we are all entrepreneurs...
So maybe we are ALL entrepreneurs, but unclear how and when to exercise the urges. We all want the same things...fulfillment, continuous learning, and freedom. How bad do YOU want them? Are you willing to work for them?
